The semi-automated Pallet Shuttle system uses an electric shuttle car that travels along rails inside deep storage channels. Operators load the shuttle with a pallet via forklift, then send commands via a Wi-Fi tablet; the shuttle transports the pallet to the next available position and compacts the lane. Sensors detect pallet length and optimize spacing, while the shuttle's high travel speed and 2-second lifting cycle minimise loading and unloading time. Individual channels can store different SKUs and operate in FIFO or LIFO modes.

The system allows channels up to 131 ft deep, operates at temperatures from -22 °F to 113 °F and features long-life batteries with automatic charging. Eliminating forklift traffic within racks reduces damage to both the structure and goods, increases operator safety and dramatically boosts throughput.

The Pallet Shuttle (or radio shuttle) is a semi-automated system in which an electrically powered shuttle runs along rails inside compact racks to load or unload pallets. Operators control the shuttle remotely via a tablet.

Forklifts do not enter the racking, improving safety and efficiency. Each channel can store different SKUs, and the system offers deeper channels and better use of height than drive-in, push-back or pallet flow racks.

Yes. Shuttle racks can coexist with selective pallet racking or drive-in racks, dedicating shuttle channels to uniform high-volume SKUs while other racks handle mixed SKUs.

The standard system is semi-automated (operators place the shuttle). Fully automated versions replace forklifts with stacker cranes or transfer cars and include warehouse control systems.

Safety is a key feature. Operators do not enter the rack, and the shuttle has obstacle detection. Safety enclosures restrict access, and netting protects aisles from falling loads.

Operators place the shuttle at a channel entrance, load a pallet and command the shuttle to deposit it at the deepest position. For FIFO operation, two aisles are used (loading and unloading). A single tablet can manage up to 18 shuttles.

Half pallets or irregular sizes can be stored if placed on a slave pallet. Battery indicators warn when charge is low; if a shuttle stalls in the rack, a second shuttle with a rescue hook can tow it out.

Yes. Interlake Mecalux’s Easy WMS includes a Pallet Shuttle module for unified control. Each shuttle carries up to 3,300 lb, travels up to 300 ft/min unloaded (150 ft/min loaded), lifts a pallet in about 2 seconds and operates for roughly 10 hours per charge. Ambient models work from 41 °F to 113 °F, while cold-storage models work from –22 °F to 41 °F.

This automation system is project-based and quoted after reviewing facility layout, load data, throughput goals, software needs, safety requirements, and destination. Shipping method, lead time, installation scope, and commissioning are confirmed with your quote. Systems may ship in phases and include rack, machines, shuttles, controls, electrical parts, safety equipment, and software hardware. Installation requires qualified mechanical, electrical, controls, and commissioning support.
